COMMANDER'S MESSAGE ~ July 1, 2010 begins the new fiscal year for the VFW. Since I am just beginning as your new Commander, I ask that you cooperate with all of the new officers for the 2010-2011 year. We have some of the best people in the Salt Springs area coming to this Post, and if we curb negative talk and criticism, we can make this the best Post in the District. For the first couple of months, I will speak with each entity in the Post, listen to their concerns, make any changes necessary to make this a more efficient Post and a fun place to come. This can only be accomplished with ALL OF YOUR HELP. ~ Wayne Crawford, Commander
VFW MEN'S AUXILIARY NEWS ~ Summertime is obviously here, and the Men's Auxiliary enjoyed doing some "sweating to the oldies" as we participated in the retiring officers' banquet on Sunday, June 6th. We honored Jim Beeler, George King, and John Vogelpohl as a total surprise to all of them! Thanks to the supporting auxiliaries for their help in making it a very special occasion. We have a great Post with lots of friendships developed over the years, inside and outside the confines of the VFW. Let's all make it a great one as we welcome in the new officers of our beloved Post and the various auxiliaries. Always remember one thing: We can have differences of opinions on certain issues, but we're always friends regardless! That's what the Salt Springs area is all about! ~ Joe Massey, Secretary/Chaplain
VFW LADIES AUXILIARY NEWS ~ Welcome to all our new members! Hope to see you at our monthly meetings held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 7 PM. Please see the Officers list to see your new Auxiliary Officers for 2010-2011. Thank you to all our out-going officers for a wonderful job last year and a big welcome to our new incoming officers. We will all miss having Jim Beeler as our Commander-thank you for your guidance over the last few years-you always stood behind us and gave us your full support. We'd like to say congratulations to our new Commander, Wayne Crawford. We're looking forward to another great year. Thank you to all our cookie bakers! They will be packed and shipped to Afghanistan. Our next big project coming up will be our back-to-school party, so please think about donating some school supplies; they can be dropped off at the Post. Thank you to ALL the members of the Post for your continued support with our many projects-your donations and help are greatly appreciated. Thanks to all, we will be coming home from convention with an ALL STATE award for the 2nd year. ~ Loretta Beilstein, President

REMEMBERING OUR TROOPS ~ Our Treasurer, Joanne Crawford, has a granddaughter currently stationed in Afghanistan. When we asked Joanne if there was anything the Ladies Auxiliary could send to her and her fellow sailors, she said everyone would love to receive letters. So, I'm asking everyone if they would please write a letter, get it to an Auxiliary Member, and we will forward them on to her Unit. The following information is from a web site called www.SoldiersAngels.org. This site suggested that you introduce yourself, thank the Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or Marine for their service to our country, and let them know a little about yourself, your family, and anything else you would like to share. They all seem to enjoy hearing about everyday "back home" activities.

COMMANDER'S MESSAGE ~ Greetings, I hope this message finds you doing well and in good spirits. I would like to start this off by telling you that I chose not to seek election as your Commander for the term 2010-2011. I have held this position for seven years, and I have enjoyed serving you over that period. We have accomplished a lot together, and we have made the Post a fun place to be-having fun in the Canteen, serving delicious meals, and a great Bingo. We have totally upgraded the Post property both outside and inside. I am very proud of what has been accomplished over the last seven years. I want to thank everyone who helped and supported me to make this time so rewarding. As of July 1, 2010, Wayne Crawford will be our new Commander. Wayne is a fine man and a dedicated VFW member. I feel that Wayne will do a very good job as our Commander. I will remind you that no one person can do this job alone. So let us all step up to the plate and assist him to insure that our Post continues to be a place and an organization of which we can be proud. Once again, I want to thank you for a rewarding seven years. ~ Jim Beeler, Commander

REMEMBERING OUR TROOPS ~ We've been busy providing for our adopted Army Unit in Afghanistan. So far, we've sent them games, food, fly swatters, a mini-fridge, bug zappers, books, and goody bags for Christmas, Valentine's Day, and Easter. They have been thrilled with everything we've sent, according to a telephone call we received from our contact solider in Afghanistan. They are now in need of AAA batteries for their helmet headlights. These have been ordered and will be shipped as soon as we receive them. Thank you to all who have been so generous with donations to help us supply these items.
REMEMBERING OUR VETERANS ~ As reported in the Palatka Daily News on April 3rd, through the combined efforts of Loretta Beilstein, Joanne Crawford, Jaye Beeler, Non Rasmusses, Mary Gates, and Clara Sheffield, the wishes of 90-year-old WASP Marquerite Bernhardt were fulfilled. On March 9th, these Ladies Auxiliary members took Marquerite to lunch and then to a private airfield for a flight in a Lake L-4 Amphihan plane. The pilot let Marquerite fly the plane for a while. Her wishes to fly and be in a plane one more time before she passes were realized, and the smile you see in the picture shows how much it meant to her - "A Patriotic Flight and the Gift of a Lifetime." Thanks ladies for all your hard work and efforts for this and every project we undertake.
