FROM THE LIEUTENANT'S DESK ~ Fall has arrived and with the cooler weather comes a host of outdoor activities, some of which are highlighted below with the laws that govern them. Hunting Season: Archery season began in the Ocala National Forest on Sept 25, Muzzleloader season will be Halloween weekend, and Modern Gun season begins Nov 13th. >> For a list of all the dates and regulations surrounding hunting season, please visit www.myfwc.com, or you can pick up a brochure at the Sheriff's Office or one of our local sporting goods stores. ATV's/Golf Carts: Due to increased vehicle traffic, we want to remind everyone that it is illegal to operate an ATV and/or a Golf Cart on any public roadway -- this includes the right-of-way of any paved road, as well as any unpaved road which is open to public use. >> An ATV is defined as any 3-wheeler, 4-wheeler or utility vehicle (like the Polaris Ranger or John Deere Gator). Also, ATV and Golf Cart violations are considered moving violations & can result in points being assessed against your driver's license. The US Forest Service has a number of designated trails which are open for ATV use within the forest. Additional information on these trails is available at www.fs.fed.us. Wildlife: With bear activity increasing as they begin looking for acorns and palmetto berries, please remember that bears are protected by Florida law and it is illegal to harm them in any way. Bears are usually attracted to our homes by bird feeders, pet food and/or our garbage. The FL Wildlife Commission has a very informative brochure about living with bears, which can be obtained from their office in Ocala. Any/all bear related issues need to be addressed by the FL Wildlife Commission. The Sheriff's Office has no authority to deal with bears and/or bear complaints. Another service provided by the Sheriff's Office... Home Security Checks: For those taking trips this Fall, please remember that the Sheriff's Office offers vacation checks for your home while you are away. Simply notify us at 352-402-6010 and we'll add you to our patrols. This is just one of the services provided by our volunteer COPS unit; helping to keep our community safe! |

IT'S GOOD FOR YOU ~ Studies have determined that, when you serve your community you enrich your life and helping others makes you healthier & happier. Community work brings families closer together and exposes you to new people & things that you may not have had the opportunity to experience before. Plus, when you lift other's spirits, you feel better yourself. So, 'doing good' is good for everyone! The new Board of the Salt Springs Civic Association wants to 'do good' for ALL in the community, but we cannot do it alone. We are always ready to welcome any volunteers interested in helping us accomplish the tasks at hand. If you are unable to be a hands-on volunteer, we also accept tax-deductible donations to help us achieve our goals for the community. As a chartered not-for-profit corporation, the Civic Association is solely funded through fundraising activities, tax-deductible donations and annual membership dues from local residents, businesses & organizations. So, if you want to feel good about yourself and lift other's spirits in the process, become a member of the Salt Springs Civic Association. The community will thank you! To contact the Association, please see page 4.
PARK RENOVATION PROJECT ~ The success of September-Fest has the Association planning additional renovations at the Community Park, and the County has offered to assist by performing an inspection and advising as to the repairs needed for bringing things up-to-date. Commissioner Barbara Fitos was in attendance at our September meeting and provided information relative to previous inspections conducted. She commended the Association on the repairs made and, in a letter received following the meeting, it was noted that the Association has "invested noticeable time and money for improvements to the Community Center", adding that the County looks forward to working with us, "as this Park is truly the heart of the Salt Springs community". Current planned renovations include: repair to & addition of benches along the walking trail and addressing the water run-off issue near the tennis courts. Additional items, as well as the findings from the County inspection, will be discussed at the Oct 18th Association Meeting. As an added note, Commissioner Fitos is one of the few political figures who routinely comes into our community to speak with the residents and address our concerns. She is running for re-election in November and is seeking your vote.

WITH MANY THANKS ~ With September-Fest behind us, the Civic Association has many "Thank You's" to extend to the numerous people that worked to make the day a success. The Association, and the community, owes a debt of gratitude to all who assisted with preparation & renovation of the Park... Thank you to JL & Michele Snowden of Bass Champions and 'their boys', Jarrett Snowden & Kevin Simpson, for taking on the ball field renovation project... to Hal Glenn of Groundhog Excavating for all his efforts & generosity with the volleyball court... to Jimmy Littleton of Littleton's Carpet and George McManus, one of our local umpires and a member of the Palm Tree Santas, for your efforts with the football & soccer fields... to Mike Powell (a.k.a. "Mike the Painter"), Salt Springs Most Famous Painter, for painting the dugouts & picnic tables and to Pat Needham of Buck-N-Bass for supplying the paint... to Sene Capps of Capps Tree Service for his Bobcat & skilled labor... to Candy Lakey of Candy's Lawn Service for getting the soccer & football fields looking great, and to Walt Miller of Salt Springs Christian Church for cutting grass in the park... To those who 'worked' the Festival, we could not have done it without you! We are forever grateful for the time you devoted in the concession stand, with the kids activities, and on the Ad Books. Thank you to Max & Donna Timbrook, Karen & Rick McKeever, Walt Miller, Stacey Hager, Danny Driggs, Peter White, Blondy Dykes, and Andrew Clifford. And&ldots; a special 'Thank You' to the Palm Tree Santas for devoting their time to our kids & community... to Rick Holland DJ & Entertainment... to Deb Daniels for her face painting talents... to David Burkhalter & Joe Gorney for cookin' up some really tasty chicken... to JL & Michele Snowden, Cyndi Newbern, and KT & Ann Butler for furnishing side dishes... to the Marion County Humane Society & their furry friends for spending the afternoon with us... to all the advertisers & friends that made our Festival Ad Book so great... and, to our Door Prize donors - Hooters of Ocala, Salt Springs Recreation Area, and Perry's Ocean Edge Resort in Daytona - Thank You All! Lastly... we extend a huge "CONGRATULATONS" to our Grand Prize Winner -- Diane Burkhalter of Hair Solutions -- who will be spending 2-nights at Perry's Resort on the beach in Daytona. Hope you have a great time! The Association can't thank you all enough, for everything!!
THE FINAL COUNTDOWN Since NASA has postponed the last two shuttle launches until November and February, you still have a chance to see (and feel) a launch up-close and in-person. NASA sells tickets for the 'primo' viewing spot, but they go fast (visit www.KennedySpaceCenter.com for details). The best 'free' vantage point for watching a launch is Space View Park in Titusville, but you'll need to get there early to get a good spot&ldots; If you haven't seen a launch up-close in the past, it's getting down to the wire&ldots; you better make arrangements now before this chapter of history concludes, and you miss out on the experience!
A BIRTHDAY TREE ~ Give the present that will last far longer than a lifetime... plant a tree for the birth/birthday of your child or grandchild. He/she can watch the tree grow as they grow, enjoy the cool shade it provides in summer and, trees slow global warming by absorbing CO2... they also provide food & shelter for wildlife. So, instead of buying a gift that is the wrong color or style, plant the gift that will keep giving for generations to come!
ADVERTISING SPACE ~ Whether you have a business or want to sell your old car/etc, in addition to space on our website, the 'Salt Springs Community News' is now offering advertising space to offset the cost of this publication. Currently, we distribute 500 copies each month -- that's 500 hands your ad will be in, and people are talking! Ad cost is $5.00 per month. So, contact the Association and get your advertisement included for the next edition!
