FALL FESTIVAL RESCHEDULED ~ Due to concerns expressed by members of our community at the October Civic Association Meeting, a vote was prompted to change the date of the Fall Festival Weekend event. The new date has not yet been determined, but is tentative for February 2011. More info will follow. Letters of notification have been mailed to all Ad Book participants, relative to this change and the status of their listing(s). Anyone with questions, please contact the Civic Association. Thank you. COMMUNITY-WIDE YARD SALE ~ In conjunction with the Annual Fall Yard Sale & Bake Sale at Salt Springs Village, the Civic Association is coordinating a 'Community-Wide Yard Sale' on Nov 13th from 8am to 2pm. Numerous residents within the community are holding Yard Sales that day, some of which have registered with the Civic Association and will be included on the "Yard Sale Map", which will be available at the Community Bulletin Board starting Nov 6th, for 'lookers & buyers' to 'plot their route' to the Sales! Anyone interested in participating who missed the Nov 1st registration deadline can still join in on the action... Space is available at the Elite Flea Market at Salt Springs Square (call 352-685-3923 for info), or you can set up a table in the parking lot at Bass Champions (on Hwy 314) or at the Community Park (on Hwy 316) - all three of these locations are reflected on the 'Yard Sale Map'. FREE STUFF ~ The Civic Association still has a few used bicycles in need of a new home. Anyone interested and/or who knows of a child in need, please contact the Association at 352-537-2871. GIVE & GET ~ During November, Westbrook Chiropractic is offering a free initial exam for anyone who brings in a paper bag of non-perishable food items/groceries. All food items donated will be distributed to needy families within our community for the holidays. Exam appointments are available on Wednesdays & Saturdays, from Nov 1st - 24th. For additional information and/or to schedule your appointment, call 352-685-2467. Happy Holidays!

FROM THE LIEUTENANT'S DESK ~ As the holidays approach, many of us will be taking to the road to visit family and friends in far away locations. Therefore, take a few moments to review some tips to make your trips safer, and your return home more enjoyable. 1) Don't advertise that you will be away... We all get excited about going to see the kids & grandkids, but thieves often loiter in areas like grocery stores and restaurants, waiting for proud moms & grandmas to talk about the big trip they're about to take. Then, while you're away, they make themselves at home - at 'your' home! 2) Don't make your absence obvious... by letting your mail and/or newspapers pile up. If you're going to be gone for an extended period of time, have your newspaper delivery suspended and your mail put on-hold. If your trip will be a short one, then ask a neighbor to collect your papers & mail for you. 3) Don't advertise your absence... by letting your home's appearance give you away. Arrange to have your lawn maintained (mowed, raked, etc). Attach timers to several lights inside your home, to come on at various intervals, to make it look like you are there ...and, leave your car or a neighbor's car in the driveway. 4) Finally, ask a trusted friend to keep an eye on your home... If you don't know someone who can watch your house, the Sheriff's Office can help. We offer free security checks for local homeowners. Simply contact the Office at 352-402-6010 (during regular office hours) to request this service. Following these tips is not a guarantee that your home won't be burglarized, but they will greatly increase your chances of a happy homecoming. Happy Trails! ~ Lt. Dennis M. Chesser SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSES ~ Classes are currently being held for anyone interested in learning sign language. Classes are open to all interested persons in the community and are held each Tuesday evening, at 6pm, in the Fellowship Hall at Salt Springs Christian Church. For additional information, please contact Stacey at 352-685-2779. Thank you.

NEW TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD ~ We're happy to announce that we've got some new businesses in Salt Springs... Buck-n-Bass Sports Center ~ Under new ownership, Stacy & Deanna Weeks have already started their expansion of the store, including more guns & hunting supplies, new gift ideas, and more rental options. Be sure to stop in and see what's going on. Also, check out the 'White Tail Sweepstakes' on the next page... Backwoods Country Store ~ The owners of Backwoods Smokehouse (on Hwy 310 at 315) are brining their fabulous on-premises Smoked BBQ to Salt Springs, along with wings, pizza & calzone. Plus, lots of 'Country Store' goods, such as jams, jellies, canning goods & Country hams. And, they also do catering! Watch for their Grand Opening in The Square (previously Black Bear Country Store)! For additional info, call 352-685-2308. PARK RENOVATION PROJECT ~ Representatives from the County performed an inspection at the Community Center & Park in early October and have advised as to the repairs needed to bring the buildings up to code. Although not as lengthily a list as we had anticipated, there are still several items that need to be address, such as a new roof on both the Community Center & the Concession Stand. Since the Park buildings & grounds are maintained by the Association who is funded through membership dues, donations & fund raising activities, we are asking for the assistance of the Community to complete the improvements needed. We are seeking donations; simply $5-$10 per resident would greatly help cover towards the cost for repairs, and possibly some added improvements, as well. And/or, we are seeking any/all able-bodied individuals to assist with the labor for the repairs. Anyone interested/able to help, please contact the Association for further info. Thank you for your help! LAKE KERR 'CRIME WATCH' ~ The Marion County Sheriff's Office is working to establish a crime watch program called 'Lake Watch' for Lake Kerr. To help with this effort, they are seeking someone willing to donate a pontoon boat for patrolling the Lake. The tax deductible donation would come through the Marion County Sheriff's Office Foundation, Inc., a non-profit public charity. Once the gift becomes the property of the Sheriff's Office, it will be manned by members of the Northeast Citizens On Patrol (COPS) Unit. "We are looking for a pontoon boat, in good condition, to help protect people who live in the area and enjoy using the Lake," said Lieutenant Dennis Chesser, Commander of the Marion County Sheriff's Office, Northeast District. Anyone interested in assisting with this effort, please contact the Sheriff's Office at 352-402-6010.

To schedule an appointment, please call 352-732-3008. GROW HERBS - FEEL BETTER ~ These five herbs may boost brain health, alleviate aches and even help you sleep better - and they're easy to grow! PEPPERMINT calms the muscles of the digestive tract to alleviate intestinal gas and cramping. A cup of warm peppermint tea can also thin mucus, loosen phlegm, and soothe sore throats. Applied topically, it takes the itch out of bug bites and can ease muscle cramps, arthritis, and headaches. LEMON BALM, also called the 'gladdening' herb, can dispel anxiety and heart palpitations, and relieve tension and restlessness. It also has cognitive benefits; studies have shown an increase in memory and improved mood after ingesting lemon balm. Similar results have been found with Alzheimer's patients. ROSEMARY has been used as a memory enhancer for centuries, and can also reduce joint pain. VALERIAN, which in Latin means "to be in good health", has been used as a sedative and sleep aid throughout history. For some, the smell alone is enough for them to nod-off. It can also improve sleep quality. SAGE, combined with Echinacea, is as effective a painkiller as lidocaine for a sore throat, and the herb's bacteria-fighting heft makes it a potent breath freshener, too. FOR YOUR REVIEW ~ As part of the responsibility of the Board of the Salt Springs Civic Association, the Association's By-Laws have been reviewed and modified. The updated By-Laws are a combination of the prior three versions, along with specifics relative to this administration. Copies of the revised By-Laws will be distributed, via email, to those on the Association's email list and also will be available on our website. Discussion and voting on acceptance of the revised By-Laws will take place at the Civic Association Meeting on Nov 15th.

SEPTIC SYSTEM INSPECTIONS ~ Back in August, the Marion County Commission repealed a key portion of its Springs Protection Ordinance dealing with septic systems, stating that the ordinance's mandate for routine inspections of septic tanks was unnecessary. The reason: Legislature passed a law requiring the same thing for all of Florida. But now some state lawmakers, including one representing Marion County, are out to undo parts of the state law because they don't believe their constituents can afford to comply. Moreover, they have concerns that contractors who would do the inspections could benefit financially from the state's mandate. State Sen. Evelyn Lynn, R-Ormond Beach, whose district spans much of eastern Marion Cnty, is among lawmakers trying to reverse a portion of Senate Bill 550, which passed with broad bipartisan support during the spring session. Lynn initially voted for the bill, because it offered vital protection for waterways and water resources, but has recently taken note of flaws in the new law, including a requirement for regular septic inspections. Under the new law, beginning Jan. 1, 2011, septic tank owners are to have systems inspected once every five years to ensure they are working properly. Septic tanks that need pumping and/or are not functioning will need to be fixed or replaced at the owner's expense. It is estimated that evaluation & pumping of the septic system could cost $500, with repairs ranging between $2,000 and $4,000. Another issue identified is the provision for inspections to be conducted by licensed septic contractors,
|
which could create a conflict of interest because the inspector may be the same person hired to repair and/or replace the system. A 2008 Health Dept report noted that Florida has 2.3 million septic systems, with 120,000 of them located in Marion County, but only a small fraction of the systems receive mandatory routine inspections. Generally, systems are only serviced when they fail, and over half of the current systems are 30 years old or older and were installed under standards less stringent than the current. It is estimated that nearly 10% of existing systems could require repair during the initial phase of the inspection cycle, and that SB 550 would provide the "mechanism" to inspect 460,000 septic systems a year at costs ranging from $85 to $250 per inspection. During the 2010 legislative session, it was noted that only 17,000 systems are inspected and/or pumped each year. With the inspection of a half-million systems per year, this plan could create a severe shortage of septic contractors, whereby creating jobs for hundreds, or thousands, just to comply with the requirements. Some FL lawmakers are fighting for the repeal of the inspection provision, and have requested that Gov. Charlie Crist delay implementation until July; Crist rejected the request. In Sept, the Santa Rosa County Commission voted for a resolution expressing the county's opposition to the septic inspection requirement. In early Oct., County Commissioner Stan McClain worked out the commission's proposed legislative priorities on water-related matters. Topping the list: uphold SB 550's septic inspection program. Although McClain has acknowledged that Lynn raised valid concerns, the County still supports the inspection requirement, at this point. |

AUTUMN COLOR CHEMISTRY ~ Did you know that leaves turn red or purple because of an increase in sugars that form anthocyanins in the plant/tree? These same anthocyanins are found in purple produce, such as cabbage, beets, and grapes. Some pleasing purple plants include, 'Rubrum' Ornamental Fountain Grass, 'Rubra' & 'Sweetwater Red' Flowering Dogwood, 'Atropurpureum' Japanese Maple, and American Beautyberry. Weather influences the intensity of fall colors. Dry weather increases sugar in the sap, and bright sunshine revs-up anthocyanins. The best autumn purples occur with a combination of dry, sunny days and cool, dry nights. |
